1.
ROGER: I can’t believe this The words that I’m hearing It’s gotta be someone else That they’ve been accusing That’s double-crossed them It’s me who lost them I can’t defend the shape I’m in All of those people What were they expecting? Lightning can never strike twice For anyone, excepting The fallen rock star Perhaps I fell too far I can’t explain the state I’m in But up there in the spotlight I had the world held on a string What I wouldn’t give To feel that way again Hundreds of people With hundreds of voices They all sound the same to me, nowadays I can’t make the choices On who’s gonna last Still living in my broken past I never thought that it could end But up there when it felt right I had the world held on a string What I wouldn’t give To feel that way again (Instrumental) But up there in the spotlight I had the world held on a string What I wouldn’t give To feel that way again To feel the rhythm of the song Beneath my skin What I wouldn’t give To feel that way again
2.
SID: Your skin was pale as a winter sky The day that we first met I asked you what was wrong; You said that somehow, you forget And it seems to me That you’re goin’ down the drain Yeah, it seems to me That you’re goin’ down, you’re goin’ down Ooo… At night you walk through empty halls Without a thought to care And you know the way your sunken eyes Are showing all the wear And it seems to me That your life could use a change Yeah, it seems to me That your life could use, your life could use Some time to iron out the wrinkles on your face And return the glimmer to your eyes And maybe when you take things at a slower pace You can finally shed this thick disguise Oh… Your life has taken a turn, it seems, That you did not expect And the person you once were You know you’d love to resurrect And it seems to me That it only takes a choice Yeah, it seems to me That it only takes, it only takes…a choice.

Let Loose 04:51
SID: Safe inside your scripted dramas Each routine drives you insane How’d the formula get started? You've only got yourself to blame I need to break out of this prison Find something else to believe Trapped by my own inhibitions Trying to find some release, I need to Let loose and break everything around me Take all the time in the world Let loose, and damn all the days that found me Sitting still and letting life pass me by All the while the press keeps running No drop of ink to waste on you Try to make a clear connection A steady signal to radio through I need to get a reaction To give me some proof I exist Someone out there's bound to stop me I’ve got to try to resist so I can Let loose and break everything around me Take all the time in the world Let loose, and damn every day that found me Sitting still and letting life pass me by (Instrumental) I need to break out of this prison Find someone else to believe Trapped by my own self-obsession Trying to find some relief, I need to Let loose and break everything around me Take all the time in the world Let loose, and damn all the days that found me Sitting still and letting life pass Let loose and break all the walls around me Build up a whole different world Let loose, and damn all the days that found me Sitting still and forgetting to live, I know there's So much more that I can give, If I can Stand up and never let life pass me by Go on and pass me by Just please don’t pass me by Go ahead and pass me by Don’t ever pass me by
4.
The Real You 04:43
GRACE: I’m well aware Of this stupid act you’ve been putting on Now what I want is the real you You can play This old game until you drive yourself insane But what I want is the real you I see him somewhere inside you SID: How can I give you what you’re asking for When I can’t even tell myself From this strange role I’m playing anymore? Show me the way to me ’Cause I can’t see it—no, I can’t see it… GRACE: Whatever you’ve been pushing down In the depths of you It’s time to let it all out You’ve been holding back— For a long time, too And now it’s time to let it out Whatever you’ve been hiding from Behind closed doors I think it’s time to let it all out Just some honesty’s All I’m looking for Now it’s time to let it out SID: Well, okay, maybe you’ve got a point or two But you don’t want to see the real me It’s a sad and weak thing turning black and blue From all I’ve done to the real me GRACE: Still you won’t give me what I’m asking for ’Cause you’re afraid that all you are Is just a shadow, always wanting more But there is strength in you, And I can see it, Don’t hold in Whatever you’ve been pushing down In the depths of you ’Cause it’s time to let it all out You’ve been holding back— For a long time, too And now it’s time to let it out Whatever you’ve been hiding from Behind closed doors I think it’s time to let it all out And the antidote You’ve been searching for is to Take a chance and let it out Let it all out… SID: There’s so much I can’t hear With all these voices in my ears GRACE: Then lift your head above the noise SID: And what if I just can’t do it? What if I can’t break through it? GRACE: It’s up to you to make that choice (Instrumental) Whatever you’ve been pushing down In the depths of you It’s time to let it all out You’ve been holding back— For a long time, too And now it’s time to let it out Whatever you’ve been hiding from Behind closed doors I think it’s time to let it all out And the sweet relief You’ve been searching for Can only come if you let it out Let it all out... Let it out
5.
ROGER: The leaves fall from the trees Out of strength from holding on And now their limbs are standing bare Whispering echoes of a past long gone You hear what you forgot The hopeful words you passed along And everything seems far away Fading out like summer’s song And all those summer dreams you had Fade to autumn dreams deferred Lying in wait upon the ground Turning to dust And all the grandest schemes you made Crumble before a single word Losing resolve like dying sounds And spreading like rust You give it all you got And never get back in return You try your best to do it all But in the end your prospects burn Then lost and feeling low You turn the embers on yourself The punishment: that you alone Could make your life a living hell And all those summer dreams you had Fade to autumn dreams deferred Lying in wait upon the ground Turning to dust And all the grandest schemes you made Crumble before a single word Losing resolve like dying sounds And spreading like rust Bitter roots spread bitter fruit And I can’t stand the taste But now it’s all I have (Instrumental) And all those summer dreams I had Faded to autumn dreams deferred Lying in wait upon the ground Turning to dust And all the grandest schemes I made Crumbled before a single word Losing resolve like dying sounds And spreading like rust Bring me back those golden summer hues Take me back there Oh, let me go back…
6.
ROGER: You must be out of your mind You’ve got to take this in stride Or you might just lose your head They’ll say, “He’s fallen apart. There’s no hope for him now. He’s on his final thread.” But you just won’t leave it alone Maybe you’re better off on your own You lost yourself a long time ago The moment you made it, you died You keep on falling, but you never learn Sometimes I wonder if you tried And it’s all so overwhelming When you’ve got the world held on a string You’ve got to hold yourself up Or you could fall too far...
7.
You’re like a modern day flower child Dressed up in a long, long dress Barefoot in a field of green You are the only one who seems to know Exactly what I say And exactly what I mean Never known a person who had eyes like yours Seeing things that I’ve kept hidden Behind closed doors Just like an autumn night, leaves falling All around—you give me chills Moonlight piercing through the clouds Out there on your patio, sit and listen As your dreams go whistling by Make them your only guide On a road away from all the pain inside Time to Open up your door, And face the world, so deep and wide (Instrumental) And when the night gets cold and fill your heart with fear Just know that, if you need me, I’ll be waiting here You’re like… You are…
8.
SID: Your skin was pale as a winter sky The day that we first met I asked you what was wrong; You said that somehow, you forget And it seems to me That you’re goin’ down the drain Yeah, it seems to me That you’re goin’ down, you’re goin’ down Ooo… At night you walk through empty halls Without a thought to care And you know the way your sunken eyes Are showing all the wear And it seems to me That your life could use a change Yeah, it seems to me That your life could use, your life could use Some time to iron out the wrinkles on your face And return the glimmer to your eyes And maybe when you take things at a slower pace You can finally shed this thick disguise Oh… Your life has taken a turn, it seems, That you did not expect And the person you once were You know you’d love to resurrect Yeah, it seems to me That it only takes a choice Yeah, it seems to me That it only takes, it only takes…a choice.
9.
GRACE: I have my good days, But I’ve got bad that stick around I’m dealing with them the best I can An empty canvas Is the best therapy, I’ve found It’s where I start to sketch my plan ’Cause when I close my eyes, I see the beauty Of what the world could be: Colors brighter than reality And if the world can’t measure up to what I’ve seen, I’ll just have to paint that picture to show them what I mean Hanging pictures up To see what people say Feels like my heart’s hung on these walls The doctor asked me, Does it feel like it’s the only way To deal with all the flaws and faults I see, and I say, When I close my eyes, I see the beauty The person I could be Finished paintings steal the breath of me But when I open them, a shadow’s all I see And I have to paint a path to lead me back to me I can’t pretend that it’s been easy on my mind Still got these scars from all the pain I left behind I’m trying to understand the darker shades they are Fighting with a world that stretched this canvas way too far (Instrumental) I have my good days, But I’ve got bad that stick around I’m dealing with them the best I can…

about

(From the original 2014 release:)

This EP features 7 songs from a longer work called We Want More, a rock opera exploring the effects of the industry, the media, and the audience on artists. It tells the story of Roger Mackson, a hard-up music producer who discovers a tape in his backlog submitted to him by a young musician named Sid Williams. The rock opera follows Sid as he makes his way through the music business, guided only by Roger and his own experiences in the business.

These songs are a sample of what you can expect from the rock opera as a whole. They are each pulled from a different place in the story and put in chronological order (excluding the bonus track[s]). I’m still working on the rest of the music, but I wanted to record these tracks as a way to get the music out there. There’s only so many times you can tell people “I’m working on a rock opera” and meet the question “When can we hear it?” with an empty sigh.

So let me introduce you to Roger and Sid (and Grace!), if only briefly. I hope you enjoy these songs. And keep your eyes and ears out for more news on We Want More in the future. It may be finished in a year, it may be finished in 10 years, but trust me—when a story wants to get told, it gets told.
